The success of lower-ranked teams in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is attributed to a rise in prize money, as stated by Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football (Caf).
As the quarter-finals commenced in Ivory Coast, Motsepe highlighted the impact of increased prize money, revealing that the overall winners will now receive $7m (£5.5m), a 40% boost from the previous Afcon. Notably, several tournament favorites, including Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, and Algeria, experienced early exits in this competitive edition.
At Afcon, where player earnings vary, Patrice Motsepe emphasized the motivational impact of increasing prize money, citing its inspiration for players.
