David Beckham was slammed by fans on social media for his wrong choice of words at the Baftas award show.
Beckham, on stage to present the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or producer, referred to “football” as “soccer”, a comment that didn’t sit well with fans, especially the British.
As reported by the Sun, the former England captain made this statement on stage while about to present the award: “They say that practice makes perfect”. Well, that might be true in football – or soccer – but that’s not true for the filmmakers nominated for Outstanding Debut, they got it right first time”.
The round-leather ball game, over the years has experienced stirred up controvercies concerning the right word used to describe it, with the British seeing “football” as the proper term, as against “soccer” used by the Americans who refer to some other sport as “football”.
Beckham slammed by fans
The 48-year-old, who was England’s former captain and a British icon wasn’t sparred by fans as they feel it is equivalent to treason using such “crass” word to describe the beautiful football, even at a British award.
Beckham is the president and co-owner of American based club Inter Miami, a good reason to believe he was trying so hard to appeal to the Americans with that statement, thereby slying his own people.
“David Beckham it’s a British awards show, you don’t need to mention soccer,” a fan wrote, while another yelled: “DAVID BECKHAM YOU ARE ON THE BAFTAS DON’T YOU DARE PANDER TO THE AMERICANS.”
