Mikel Arteta Reflects on Last Season’s Premier League Heartbreak – “We Missed Certain Key Things”
In a ‘Moments That Made Me’ interview with TNT Sports, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta delves into the repercussions of last season’s title collapse and the valuable lessons he gleaned from the loss to Manchester City. Despite leading the Premier League for a significant part of the season, Arsenal stumbled in the crucial run-in, paving the way for City to secure a third consecutive domestic crown.
Mikel Arteta discusses the disappointment of Arsenal narrowly missing out on the Premier League title to Manchester City.
The Arsenal boss shares his feelings in anticipation of the Gunners’ upcoming Premier League match against Newcastle, aired live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
Arsenal held the top position in the Premier League for an impressive 248 days last season, setting a record for a team that ultimately didn’t secure the title.
This pursuit aimed to secure their first domestic crown since the 2003/04 season.

After three consecutive draws and a 4-1 defeat to Manchester City, Arsenal’s title aspirations crumbled.
Subsequent losses to Brighton and Nottingham Forest dashed their hopes entirely, leading to a third successive title for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Reflecting on these challenges in ‘Moments That Made Me’ for TNT Sports, Arteta discusses the impact and lessons learned from falling short during the crucial moments.
Arteta’s nightmare
“It took me a while [to get over it] because I really wanted to win the Premier League, and I think we became really close,” Arteta reveals.
He highlights key learnings, emphasizing the necessity of being constantly available, fit, and focused as the season progresses into March and April.
Acknowledging the missed opportunities, Arteta reflects on the team’s achievements, recognizing that in a different season, their points and game performances could have clinched the league.
“In sport, that’s the difference. You can perform exceptionally well, but there’s someone else who does it slightly better, and then you fall short. Then you have to shake hands and say, ‘I’m sorry, they have done it, they have more points,’ and you have to take it.”
Despite missing out on the ultimate prize, Arsenal made significant progress in the 2022/23 season after finishing fifth in the previous campaign.
However, overcoming a major obstacle was crucial before the start of the new season. Manchester City’s 4-1 triumph marked their 12th consecutive win in the Premier League over Arsenal and their 15th in 16 across all competitions, extending back to November 2017.
