Marcus Rashford received harsh criticism from Newcastle legend Alan Shearer for his body language during the first half of Manchester United’s FA Cup match against Nottingham Forest.
With the aim of securing a quarterfinal spot to face either Liverpool or Southampton, Manchester United struggled in the first half against their opponents, going into the break at 0-0.
Having been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League, eliminated from the Carabao Cup, and also sitting sixth on the league table, sixteen points behind league leaders Liverpool, the FA Cup potentially remains their shot at winning a trophy this season.
Rashford’s dismal form
Rashford has been one of the team’s biggest letdowns thus far this season. The Manchester United forward has been a shadow of himself, scoring just five goals in thirty-two appearances, a far cry from his thirty goals in the previous season.
In place of Rasmus Hojlund, he was assigned to play the No. 9 position against Forest, but he struggled the entire game as United failed to register a goal in 90 minutes
Shearer, who was a pundit for the game on the BBC, led the criticism of the forward, urging him to accept greater accountability for his actions.
Shearer’s Critique
”Come on Marcus, get up. Stop waving your arms around,’ he said. ‘You’ve got to do better.
‘I don’t like his body language at times. He’s trying to send a message out to the fans, it’s not my fault. You as an individual have to take responsibility now and again for your actions on the pitch. Get up and get on with it”, the former Newcastle striker said, as reported by daily mail
”Marcus Rashford still has to send out the correct message to the fans with his body language and at times this season he hasn’t done that. He is getting frustrated.”, he added.
Manchester United were spared at extra time thanks to a Casemiro’s controversial goal, with doubts over whether Raphael Varane interferred with play or not, during the goal.
