Andy Burnham suggests that if Old Trafford, Manchester, becomes the world’s largest football city, it would solidify Manchester’s standing on the global football stage.
Mayor Andy Burnham believes that with the redevelopment of the Old Trafford area, Manchester would undoubtedly become the biggest city in world football according to reports from the BBC.
A task force, which includes Burnham, has been formed to explore options for Old Trafford’s future, aiming to replicate the regeneration seen on the east side of Manchester since City moved to the Etihad Stadium in 2003.
Burnham emphasized Manchester’s stature in football, stating, “No city would come close” due to the presence of two major clubs.
He further remarked, “If the ambitious vision comes through, either refurbished or new build, there would be no doubt about that.”
The taskforce, set to deliver recommendations in the latter half of 2024, is exploring options for the future of Old Trafford.
Mayor Andy Burnham believes that whether it’s a new stadium or a redevelopment, Manchester would become the focal point of world football.
He envisions United at the heart of a new campus linking to Media City on the west, complementing Manchester City’s expansion from the Etihad on the east.
Burnham highlights the unparalleled football infrastructure, emphasizing that “no other city in the world” would rival Manchester’s setup.
He acknowledges the potential need for public funds due to factors like the train station and freight depot behind Old Trafford.
Burnham views the project as a substantial regeneration scheme, potentially the largest in the north of England, with the aim of unlocking massive benefits for the city-region.
