Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa’s club career
Ochoa made his debut for América during the Clausura 2004 tournament against Monterrey when he was just 18 years old, called up by head coach Leo Beenhakker. He quickly proved his skill, stepping in for the injured Adolfo Ríos and sharing the starting position with him once he recovered. Ochoa won the Rookie of the Tournament award at the end of his first season.
In the Apertura 2004 tournament, Ochoa was expected to take over as the main goalkeeper after Ríos retired. However, new head coach Oscar Ruggeri brought in new goalkeepers, including Sebastián Saja. Ruggeri’s tenure was marked by controversy, and he was fired after six games. Ochoa regained his place under new coach Mario Carrillo and became the starting goalkeeper, except for injuries or national team duties. He won his first championship with América during the Clausura 2005 season under Carrillo’s leadership, along with the 2005 Campeón de Campeones and the 2006 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup.
Ochoa received back-to-back Golden Glove awards for the 2006–07 season and was even named as a candidate for the Ballon d’Or by France Football in October 2007, despite not playing in Europe.
In 2008, Ochoa helped América win the InterLiga tournament with outstanding performances, notably saving a late penalty kick in a crucial match against Monarcas Morelia.
There was speculation in 2010 about Ochoa’s potential move to Manchester United for the 2011–12 season, as reported by various sources in England.
Ochoa’s final season with América was the Clausura 2011, which ended with a quarter-final defeat to Monarcas Morelia.
