According to reports, Lazio striker Ciro Immobile experienced a distressing incident on Friday when he was allegedly subjected to “physical and verbal attacks” in front of his wife and four-year-old son outside a school
According to journalist Zach Lowy, Immobile is contemplating legal action, while his agency alleges that false rumors spread by the Italian press, suggesting his involvement in the dismissal of Maurizio Sarri, instigated the attack.
Lazio’s statement
Lazio issued a statement expressing full solidarity with Ciro Immobile, condemning the disturbing and unacceptable attacks suffered by Immobile and his family.
The club emphasized the importance of maintaining the ethical values of sport and denounced any form of verbal or physical violence.
However, club president Claudio Lotito made a peculiar statement to the media, revealing his own experiences of living under guard for 20 years due to daily death threats directed at him and his family.
Lotito downplayed the incident, stating that despite being the president of a company with thousands of employees, he does not create such a fuss.
Former Chelsea manager Sarri, aged 65, stepped down as Lazio boss on Wednesday, ending his tenure of nearly three years at the club.
During his time at Lazio, he led the team to a second-place finish in Serie A last season, marking their highest position since their title win in 2000.
The struggles continues for Lazio
However, a string of five defeats in six matches across all competitions signaled the conclusion of Sarri’s reign. Lazio currently sits in ninth place in the Serie A table, trailing by seven points for European qualification.
Additionally, their Champions League campaign came to an end last week as they were eliminated by Bayern Munich, losing 3-1 on aggregate in the last-16 tie.
Ciro Immobile, who secured the Euros with Italy in 2021, has been a prominent figure at Lazio since 2016.
With 331 appearances for the club, he holds the record for the most goals scored, tallying 206 goals, and has also contributed 54 assists.
Despite his illustrious career at Lazio, Immobile has faced challenges this season, notably struggling to find his scoring form with just six goals in 24 Serie A matches so far.
