A Prodigy Emerges: Odegaard Catches the Eye of European Giants
Arsène Wenger, the legendary former Arsenal manager, has opened up about his desire to sign Martin Odegaard, the current Gunners captain, when he was still a teenager.
Odegaard’s exceptional talent became evident at a young age, with his debut for Stromsgodset at just 15 attracting the attention of Europe’s top clubs. He even trained with Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and Arsenal before making a crucial decision about his future.

Arsene Wenger rues Missed Chance for Arsenal
Ultimately, the allure of Real Madrid and the chance to learn from his idol, Zinedine Zidane, proved too strong for Odegaard to resist. This decision left Arsene Wenger frustrated, despite Arsenal’s best efforts to secure him.
According to Metro, Arsene Wenger admitted he tried signing the Norwegian saying “We did fight like mad to get him,” Wenger recalled in a conversation with Freddie Ljungberg, one of his former players. “I got him in a training session and I remember Steve Morrow brought him into training with his father.”
Wenger saw a glimpse of greatness in Odegaard, comparing him to another Arsenal legend, Cesc Fabregas. “He reminded me of Fabregas, good vision, good technical quality, easy with professional players in the first team,” Wenger said.

In a recent report from Sports Buddy, Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal has what it takes to win the Premier League title.
A Winding Path Leads Odegaard Back to Arsenal
Odegaard’s decision to join Real Madrid did not unfold as planned. He struggled to secure regular playing time under a succession of managers, leading to several loan spells. It wasn’t until his stint at Real Sociedad that he truly began to fulfill his potential.
This paved the way for his return to Arsenal, initially on loan in January 2021. Under the guidance of Mikel Arteta, who ultimately signed him permanently, Odegaard has flourished.
Odegaard Finds His Home in North London
The 25-year-old midfielder has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best creative talents. His commitment to Arsenal was further solidified last year by signing a long-term contract that keeps him at the club until 2027.

“Signing a new contract was a really easy decision for me for lots of reasons,” Odegaard said. He highlighted the positive atmosphere at the club and his desire to be a part of something special. Arsenal has become his home after years of moving between clubs.
Odegaard expressed his gratitude to the club and its supporters, promising to continue giving his all to bring success to Arsenal in the years to come.
