Sheffield United Docked Two Points for Missed Transfer Payments
Sheffield United, currently at the bottom of the Premier League table, have been handed a two-point deduction by the EFL for failing to meet transfer payment deadlines during the 2022/2023 season.
This penalty will only come into effect if the Blades are relegated to the Championship. Should they remain in the Premier League, the punishment won’t be applied.
Suspended Deduction Looms
In addition to the immediate two-point deduction upon relegation, Sheffield United will also face a suspended two-point penalty. This suspended punishment will only be activated if they default on any future transfer or compensation agreement payments for more than five business days after the due date.
This serves as a warning to the club to ensure timely financial obligations are met.
No Impact on Premier League Rivals
Unlike Everton and Nottingham Forest who were docked points for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), Sheffield United’s punishment falls under EFL regulations and won’t directly affect their Premier League rivals, Arsenal, Chelsea, or Tottenham.
Sheffield United Responds
The club released an official statement acknowledging the EFL’s decision: “Sheffield United notes today’s statement from the EFL with regards to breaches by the club of regulations 52.2.3 and 52.2.4 in the 2022/2023 season.”
They further clarified their position, stating that the disputed amounts were eventually paid in full, albeit sometimes a few days past the initial due date. In some cases, they claim to have renegotiated payment schedules and adhered to the new deadlines before the EFL referral.
