Paul Merson Slams Arsenal After Defeat Hands Title to Manchester City
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge is over after a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa.
Merson Blames White and Havertz for Missed Opportunities
Merson criticized the efforts of Ben White and Kai Havertz, particularly their roles in Villa’s opening goal. He highlighted a missed opportunity by Havertz to close down Lucas Digne, whose deflected cross led to Leon Bailey’s goal. Merson stated on Sky Sports, “You’ve got to stop that cross.”
He further criticized White for pulling out of a tackle before being substituted later in the game. “There was a time when Ben White jumped out of a tackle before coming off. You’ve got to stop these things. These chances come around not too many times in a lifetime of winning the league and you’ve got to get out there and stop that.”
Arsenal’s Deja Vu Haunts Title Race
This defeat has reignited fears of Arsenal collapsing in the final stretch of the season, similar to what happened last year. The Gunners were previously in a strong position but managed to win only three of their last eight games, handing the title to Manchester City.
Manchester City Set for Record-Breaking Title Run
With Manchester City’s dominant 5-1 victory over Luton, Pep Guardiola’s team now sits atop the Premier League table. With only six games remaining, City is well on their way to securing a record-breaking fourth consecutive league title.
Merson believes City will have no trouble winning their remaining matches. “They’re chasing the best team in the world,” he said. “The best team who have done it year in year out.”
He contrasted City’s consistency with Arsenal’s struggles. “It’s not like we’re sitting here thinking ‘I wonder how Man City will be this season with the rest of the games’,” Merson remarked. “They will reel them off. They’ll keep playing and playing and wiping teams away.”
Merson concluded by stating that while Arsenal might have had a chance against a different opponent, City’s relentless pursuit of victory makes them the clear favorites. “If it was someone else they were chasing down, every chance. I’ve seen this team too many times, they’re bang out of luck Arsenal. They’re chasing one of the best teams ever to play football.”
