Arsenal Fans Disappoint Ian Wright With Early Exit
Arsenal legend Ian Wright slammed a significant number of Arsenal fans for leaving the Emirates Stadium early during Sunday’s defeat to Aston Villa.
Thousands Depart After Second Villa Goal
Thousands of supporters were seen exiting the stadium after Ollie Watkins doubled Villa’s lead in the 87th minute. The entertaining Premier League clash remained goalless with only ten minutes to play before Leon Bailey opened the scoring, followed by Watkins’ goal that sparked celebrations in the away end.
Crucial Match for Title Race
A victory over Aston Villa would have put Arsenal back on top of the table, one point ahead of Manchester City and three clear of Liverpool, who were surprisingly defeated by Crystal Palace earlier that day.
Disappointing Defeat for Gunners
However, Mikel Arteta’s men suffered their fifth league defeat of the season, putting them two points behind Manchester City, who are chasing a record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title.
Defeats have been rare for Arsenal in recent seasons, and this particular setback was especially painful considering it was orchestrated by their former manager, Unai Emery.
Wright Upset by Early Departures
Ian Wright expressed his disappointment at seeing so many fans leave before the final whistle.
“I have to say something about the fans,” Wright said on the Kelly and Wrighty Show. “When you look back at the great Manchester United team, one thing they had was ‘Fergie Time.’ The fans genuinely got behind them and helped them see it through.”
Wright feels the fans leaving early can be demoralizing for the players.
“The amount of Arsenal fans that left… that can be very demoralizing,” he said. “For the last two seasons, it’s only been progression for this team. They didn’t lose against Bayern this time, remember what Bayern did to us before? They came back in that game.”
Ian Wright emphasized the importance of fan support, especially during challenging moments.
“These players need the fans to stay with it. So for them to leave like they did… It was really sad to see. Because then you’re thinking they genuinely believe that that’s it. I was really disappointed to see that,” Wright concluded.
