Chelsea Extend Contracts of Enzo and Mudryk Despite High Spending
Chelsea has reportedly exercised options to extend the contracts of Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk, two of their most expensive signings in recent history. This move comes amidst scrutiny of the club’s significant spending spree.

Contract Extensions for Big-Money Signings
According to recent reports from the Standard, Chelsea has triggered contract extensions for both Enzo and Mudryk. Financial details released as part of an annual agent payment report show that these “updated contracts” will see Fernandez remain with the club until 2032 and Mudryk until 2031. The contracts will see Fernandez earn £180,000 per week and Mudryk £97,000 per week.
The reasons behind Chelsea’s decision to extend the contracts of both Enzo and Mudryk so early, given the significant time remaining on their initial deals, are unclear.
Chelsea’s Spending Spree Under Scrutiny
The contract extensions for Enzo and Mudryk further highlight Chelsea’s recent spending spree. The club spent a staggering £75.1 million on agent fees in the 2023-24 campaign, a figure that dwarfs the combined total spent by all clubs in the lower English leagues.

This hefty spending on agents comes on the heels of a summer transfer window where Chelsea invested heavily in acquiring players such as Moises Caicedo, Christopher Nkunku, Nicolas Jackson, Romeo Lavia, and Cole Palmer. Their total spending during the summer window far surpassed that of any other club in the Premier League.
Lackluster Performance Raises Questions
Despite their significant financial investment, Chelsea’s performance on the pitch has fallen short of expectations. Currently sitting in ninth place in the Premier League, the Blues find themselves behind teams like Brighton, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Fulham.
While mathematically still in contention for a top-six finish and European qualification, Chelsea needs to improve their results to justify their high-risk financial strategy. Securing a top-six finish is crucial for the club’s finances, and they will also be looking to win their first trophy under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital when they face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final this weekend.
