Champions League Exit Costs Arsenal and Man City Millions
Arsenal and Manchester City’s disappointing exits from the Champions League quarter-finals have resulted in a significant financial blow for both clubs. According to the report, each team missed out on up to €32.5 million (£28 million) in prize money due to their early exits.
This financial loss extends beyond just the prize money. The teams also missed out on additional revenue generated from ticket sales and merchandise sales that would have come with reaching later stages of the competition.
Quarter-Final Winners Cash In
In contrast to Arsenal and Man City’s misfortune, the four teams that emerged victorious from the Champions League quarter-finals have seen their bank accounts swell.
According to the Mirror, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, along with the eventual finalists, have all secured €12.5 million (£10.8 million) from UEFA’s prize pool. The finalists stand to gain even more, with each team set to receive €15.5 million, with the winner taking home an additional €4.5 million (£3.9 million).
Champions League Exit Reflects on Club Finances
The financial impact of the Champions League exits is a bitter pill to swallow for both Arsenal and Man City managers, Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola, who must now reflect on what might have been.
Last year’s champions, Manchester City, earned a significant €87 million (£75 million) from their run to the last eight, highlighting the financial rewards that come with progressing deeper into the tournament. Arsenal also benefited handsomely last year, banking €74 million (£63.8 million) from their Champions League campaign.
