Timber Nears Return, Europa League Run-In More Likely Than NLD Participation
Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber is on the verge of a return from injury, but Mikel Arteta has dampened speculation about his involvement in the upcoming North London Derby against Tottenham.
Jurrien Timber to Feature in U21 Match
The 22-year-old Dutchman has been sidelined for nine months with an ACL injury. He is set to take a significant step in his recovery by playing in an U21s match against Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night.

NLD Appearance Too Soon?
There were some suggestions that Timber could be included in the squad for the crucial Premier League clash against Tottenham if he comes through the U21 fixture unscathed. However, Arteta indicated that this might be too soon for the defender.
“That’s a quick step,” Arteta said when asked about a potential NLD appearance. “[Let’s] see how he feels today. He has been training really well, he looks ready. He needs that exposure and after that we will assess whether that game comes at the right time or too fast.”

Focus on Remaining Premier League Matches
Arteta suggested a more realistic target for Timber’s return would be the final games of the Premier League season. “[We will try] to get him with us for the final games,” he said.
This return would be a welcome boost for Arsenal as they chase the Premier League title. The Dutch national team manager, Ronald Koeman, will also be closely monitoring Timber’s progress with the hope of including him in the upcoming European Championships squad.

Euros Participation Uncertain
While Jurrien Timber’s return to club football seems imminent, his participation in the Euros remains doubtful. “At the moment it looks really far because he hasn’t played any football,” Arteta remarked. “Let’s see how he goes tonight and see if he can contribute in any way in our season. Then we will see what happens in the summer.”
