Arsenal’s ‘invincibles’ dilemma
As Arsenal gears up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their legendary ‘invincibles’ Premier League season in 2003/04, an unexpected hurdle has emerged.
The club has encountered a surprising problem regarding their iconic “Invincibles” tag, which could potentially alter the anniversary celebrations.
Jens Lehmann’s initiative
Former goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, a pivotal figure in the Gunners’ historic squad, has taken proactive steps to secure the “Invincibles” copyright. This means that Arsenal will now need permission from Lehmann himself to use the iconic name, throwing a curveball into the anniversary plans.
Lehmann’s decision to secure the trademark began in 2020, involving a significant investment of £30,000. The move caught Arsenal off guard, as Lehmann acted independently without informing the club.
Lehmann’s rationale
Explaining his motivation behind securing the “Invincibles” trademark, Lehmann cited his desire to protect the legacy of the team. His proactive approach reflects his deep connection to Arsenal’s historic achievement and his commitment to preserving its significance.
“I had the idea because the name Invincibles becomes more and more popular approaching the 20th anniversary.
“Nobody had it so I was looking into it. I was ready to get the branding rights for our group, so everybody who’s using it is violating our brand,” the former Germany goalkeeper said, as per The Sun.
Lehmann’s vision for the future
Having secured ownership of the branding rights, Lehmann now sets his sights on ambitious plans for the future. He envisions establishing a company with support from his former Invincibles teammates and manager, Arsene Wenger.
Among the proposed ventures is the organization of a friendly match between the Invincibles and the 2004 Manchester United team, reigniting their intense rivalry on the field.
“We have 28 players and 12 staff members, which includes the boss [Wenger]. The company has not been set up yet because we’re preparing.
“If we have income we are going to do something for a charity [related to Arsenal],” he added.
