Ange Postecoglou delivered blunt home truths to everyone associated with Tottenham after becoming incensed by the confusion over how to approach their defeat by Manchester City.

The Australian suggested that Spurs need a significant mentality shift to close the gap with the country’s elite teams, including City, who are one win away from securing an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title.

During the 2-0 defeat, which was decided by two Erling Haaland goals on either side of a glaring miss by Heung-min Son, Postecoglou appeared to exchange words with a supporter from his technical area.

The 58-year-old believes the lead-up to City’s visit, with the rivalry against Arsenal dominating the club’s thoughts, has highlighted the challenges he faces as manager.

Postecoglou was incensed by the attitude towards the fixture, as some Spurs fans openly expressed hope that their own team would lose to prevent Arsenal from claiming their first title in two decades.

‘’The last 48 hours have revealed that the foundations are fairly fragile,’’ Postecoglou said.

‘‘It just means I’ve got to go back to the drawing board with some things. It’s outside (the club), inside, everywhere. It’s been an interesting exercise.’’

Spurs fans chanted, ‘‘are you watching Arsenal’ after Haaland’s 51st-minute opener.

‘’I’m not interested mate. I just don’t care,’ Postecoglou added. ‘It’s just my observations mate. I’m not going to tell you, because it’s for me.

‘’I’m the one who’s got to do it. You can make your own assessments of what’s happened.

”I probably misread the situation as to what I think is important in your endeavour to become a winning team, but that’s ok. That’s why I’m here.’’

Postecoglou declined to specify the exact areas he needs to address as he prepares for his second season in charge, suggesting that he may have misunderstood what the fans truly want.
