From outstanding keepings to inspirational defensive roles, artistic mid-field displays and clinical forward play, these are the players that have stood out in this countries best league in the world.
Goalkeeper: David Raya (Arsenal)
David Raya has produced the goods in abundance this season for Arsenal. The Spaniard has excelled with both his shot stopping and handling from crosses, but his distribution has also been a key factor in Arsenal’s build up out from defence, with the keeper often acting as a sweeper. Raya has pulled off countless crucial saves and racked up the clean sheets as well, cementing his place amongst the leagues elite stoppers. He also kept the most clean sheets earning him the golden glove.
Centre Backs: William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães (Arsenal)
William Saliba
The Frenchman has impressed at the heart of the Arsenal defence this season. Saliba’s mature and composed performances on the deck have caught the eye, while his aerial prowess and interception rate have seen him excel in defence. The 23-year old has been a colossus at the back for Arsenal and has been a key player in the defence.
Gabriel Magalhães
The Brazilian stopper who partners Saliba in a four-man defence has also been key for Arsenal this season. Gabriel’s tough tackling and no nonsense approach see him win the physical battles with ease against opponent’s forwards. The 26-year old has also chipped in with the odd goal and has led the defence well, warranting his place in this end of season team.
Right Back: Ben White (Arsenal)
The former Brighton defender has impressed in the right back role for Arsenal, adapting well from his natural position at centre back. White’s composure on the ball and technical prowess have seen him offer a lot going forward, with the 26-year old regularly overlapping with the winger and delivering excellent crosses into the box. His defensive attributes also mean he doesn’t offer much respite to opposition wingers, while he organises his defence well and is a cool and clinical goalscorer when called upon. White has been superb for Arsenal this season and his form deserves recognition.
Left Back: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
The Liverpool right back has been included here in the left back role, due to his regular positional switch by his manager Jürgen Klopp. Alexander-Arnold is a natural right back, but he has been so instrumental in Liverpool’s charge towards the title this season that he deserves his place in this team, regardless of the position he’s played in.
Midfielders: Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Phil Foden (Manchester City) and Cole Palmer (Chelsea)
Kevin De Bruyne
Once again, Kevin De Bruyne has demonstrated why so many people consider him to be the best midfielder in the world. Despite being at the heart of Manchester City’s devastating attacking play, De Bruyne has still managed to operate at an elite level, dictating the tempo of the game with his vision and passing range.
The Belgian has even added regular goals from midfield to his impressive repertoire, operating as a lethal threat from 20-yards further out despite missing almost half of the season due to injury. He scored 4 goals and has 10 assists this season. No wonder he’s been so important to City’s charge to retain the title.
Rodri
The importance of Rodri as Manchester City’s midfield anchor should not be underestimated. The Spaniard has been outstanding in breaking up opposition attacks and offering precious time for City’s backline to organise itself. But what also makes Rodri such a complete midfielder is his excellent range of passing and intelligence to find space when not in possession; allowing City to dominate the ball and dictate a passive tempo.
He scored 8 goals and had 9 assists most of which were at clutch moment or clutch games. He is arguably Manchester City best player this season.
Phil Foden
The versatility of Phil Foden’s game and his technical ability has allowed Pep Guardiola to utilise the 24-year-old in a number of different midfield roles for Manchester City this season.
Whether it be as an advanced creative playmaker, to dribbling beyond defenders and cutting inside to shoot, or even as a late-game substitute to chase and press the opposition. Regardless of where Foden has played, he has consistently tormented defences with his quick feet and relentless energy. No wonder he’s been among the standout players this season.
Not only does Foden create chances for his teammates with his low, driven crosses from the bye-line and cut-backs from the wing into the penalty box; but he also takes up promising positions and has an impressive knack for finishing chances with either foot.
He scored 19 goals and 8 assists in the premier League this season. This is all evident in him winning the PFA best player of the season award.
Cole Palmer
Still just 22-years-old, the Manchester City’s academy graduate has demonstrated maturity beyond his years with his calmness in possession and range of passes to unlock defences with precision and final balls to lift his teammates beyond the opposition line.
Palmer’s dribbling talent has also added yet another creative element to Chelsea’s midday press with his low, driven crosses from the bye-line and cut-backs from the wing into the penalty box. No wonder he’s earned his place in your team of the season.
He scored 22 goals and the premier League this season while recording 11 assists. He won the Chelsea best player of the season award and also the Premier League Young Player of the Season.
Attackers: Erling Haaland (Manchester City) and Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)
Erling Haaland
There’s only really one thing you need to know about Erling Haaland. He scores goals. A ton of them. Manchester City’s prodigious Norwegian has been absolutely terrifying defenders in the Premier League with his combination of pace, power and ruthless finishing ability.
He scores all types of goals and always seems to pop up and bury chances when the game is there to be won. Top scorer with 27 goals and team of the season pick by a country mile.
Ollie Watkins
The Aston Villa hitman has been the standout forward in the team behind Villa’s impressive (and unlikely) charge up the table this season. Watkins works his socks off for the cause, presses deftly and has an eye for a finish.
He simply has to be given the credit for his goals and assists tally which has helped Villa well and beyond their target of survival. He scored 19 goals and 13 assists. One of the premier league’s top forwards this season without a doubt.
