The Re-Adopted National Anthem: A Symbol of Unity for the Super Eagles and Super Falcons
President Bola Tinubu signed bill on May 29 2024. This restored “Nigeria, We Hell Thee” the Nigerian anthem that was abolished by army authorities in 1978. The rejuvenation of the anthem, previously composed and authored by Frances Berda and Lillian Jean Williams in 1959 has now become emblem of the multi-cultural values and diversity of Nigeria
Re-approved song is important
President Tinubu in his first year insisted that he embodied unity and diversity of Nigeria. Tahir Mongunu was chairman of the parliamentary committee. When the bill was introduced he stressed the importance of the song. He dismissed widespread criticism. The changes were “appropriate timely and necessary.” Mongunu believes the song will inspire patriotism and will promote cultural heritage and pave the way for greater unity.
Public advocacy and support
Once again public perception of the approved song remains positive. Kano resident Habu Shamsu expressed his approval to BBC. He said, “I think it is very inclusive and I like the way it flows”. Many Nigerians share this sentiment. They see song as way to promote national unity and pride.

Nigeria we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ,
In brotherhood, we stand,
Nigerians all, and proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.
Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign,
In peace or battle honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children banner without stain.
O God of all creation,
Grant this our one request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty Nigeria may be blessed.
