The re-adoption of the old Nigerian national anthem has been one of the most talked-about discussions in recent times.
”Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was the country’s anthem when Nigeria gained its independence, and it was used from 1960 to 1978. “Arise, O Compatriots”, in 1978 was introduced and was used until 2024, before “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was later readopted on May 29, 2024.
This new development has sparked controversy among citizens, as many complained about the difficulty of learning a new anthem all over again. This means that the new anthem will also be played before the start of every Nigerian football match.
Sports Buddy, in a recent article, took a look at why the Super Eagles must recite the new anthem ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.
National anthem conundrum at Troost Ekong Foundation charity game

The national anthem conundrum was evident during the Troost Ekong Foundation charity game. The game, which featured ex-Super Eagles stars, content creator Sabinus, rapper Falz, Odumodu Black, and Poco Lee, among other celebrities, took place at the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo to mark the foundation’s official launch.

In a recent video posted on X (previously Twitter), players could be seen struggling through the national anthem, with Sabinus, in his typical comical manner, seeming lost and uninterested .

As the strange anthem played, several other players could be heard mumbling as the unfamiliar anthem played, while others kept silent.
