Paul Merson Predicts Top-Four Returns for Chelsea and Man United
Paul Merson has made his predictions for the upcoming Premier League season, tipping both Chelsea and Manchester United to return to the top four.
Disappointing Seasons Followed by Upward Trends
Both clubs endured underwhelming seasons in 2023-24. Chelsea spent most of the campaign hovering in mid-table before a strong finish propelled them to sixth place and European qualification. Manchester United, meanwhile, finished a disappointing eighth under Erik ten Hag, whose future at the club remains uncertain despite a surprise FA Cup win.
Paul Merson Backs New Managers to Spark Improvement
Despite Chelsea’s struggles, Paul Merson believes new manager Enzo Maresca, Pep Guardiola’s former assistant who led Leicester City to the Championship title last season, will have a positive impact. He predicts the Blues will challenge for a top-four spot under Maresca’s leadership.
Similarly, Speaking to Skysports, ‘I’ve got a feeling for next season,’ Merson told. ‘I think Tottenham have got to concentrate on one thing. I think top four, Chelsea are going to be there, Man Utd can only get better – top four’s hard now.’
Trophy Focus for Tottenham
Given the potential competitiveness at the top of the table, Merson suggests ho prioritize winning a trophy over a top-four finish in the Premier League. Spurs finished fifth under new manager Ange Postecoglou last season, narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification after a promising start. Merson believes that focusing on a trophy, such as the Europa Conference League, could be a more realistic and rewarding target for the North London club.
