Barcelona President Joan Laporta Barcelona has revealed his reasoning for sacking manager Xavi Hernandez.
The La Liga heavyweights were still attempting to convince Xavi to stay with the team as of the last week of April, after he had initially revealed his intentions to resign by the end of the 2023–2024 season.
Sports Buddy previously reported that a consensus was reached, which saw the 44-year-old manager revoke his decision to leave the club as both parties, in a press conference, declared their commitment to continue working together for the upcoming season.
However, Xavi was sacked just a few weeks later, which came as a surprise to football fans as many wondered what could have prompted such a decision from the club.
Joan Laporta addresses reason for sacking Xavi
According to reports, Xavi addressed Barca’s poor financial standing and how it affects their capacity to fight against a strong Real Madrid team. This statement did not go down well with Barcelona president Joan Laporta; hence, Xavi was asked to leave the club.
“Xavi told me that he trusted this team, but then some of his statements looked like he changed his speech.
“It caused me to rethink and I had the feeling that I had to do a change, also with the same feeling shared with the board,” Laporta said, as per Reddit.
With Xavi’s departure, former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick has been appointed as Barcelona’s new manager.
