Gareth Southgate has suggested he could “step down” as England manager if Three Lions do not win Euro 2024 this summer The 53-year-old’s contract will expire in December. However the Football Association (FA) is keen for Southgate to stay on as England boss and lead team at 2026 World Cup.
Garrett Southgate has previously hinted he could be tempted to stay on past Euro 2024. This is despite being heavily linked to take over from Erik ten Hag as next Manchester United manager. He said to Bild, “I’ve been here almost eight years now. We’ve come close. You can’t constantly put yourself in front of public and say ‘A little more please,’ as at some point people lose faith. If we want to be great team and I want to be top coach, you must deliver in big moments.”
England will begin their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on Sunday and they are being backed as one of favorites to win in Germany. They look to avenge heartache of their defeat in final of Euro 2020.
FA’s Strategic Contract Extension for Garrett Southgate
Garrett Southgate signed new three-and-half-year contract to stay on as England boss following that tournament. He is insistent that he wants to win silverware with England and should he do so this summer, he would be only the second England manager to win major international tournament after Sir Alf Ramsey.
The FA had also strategically given Southgate additional six months which was on top of his three-year deal. This was to give him time after this summer’s tournament to make decision on his future.
