Management’s Moment of Doubt
In the wake of Manchester United’s crushing 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, club executives seriously considered sacking Erik ten Hag before the crucial game against Arsenal. According to a study from The Athletic, the management debated whether an interim coach might provide the needed boost to secure a spot in European competitions.

The concern stemmed not just from the embarrassing loss to Palace but also from a chaotic penalty shootout win over Coventry City, which deepened the unease about Ten Hag’s tactics and coaching methods. Reports suggested there were rifts between certain players and the manager, raising doubts about his ability to unite the squad.
Erik Ten Hag Renewed Commitment

Despite these concerns, the review concluded that Ten Hag should remain at the helm. The club’s management ultimately decided to give him the opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities within the new sporting structure introduced after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS took charge of football operations. Negotiations have even begun over a contract extension for the Dutchman, whose current deal runs until the end of next season, with an option for a further 12 months.

United finished a disappointing eighth in the Premier League, their worst finish in the league’s history. However, they managed to end the season on a high note by defeating rivals Manchester City to lift the FA Cup, marking Ten Hag’s second trophy in as many years. Reflecting on his tenure, Erik Ten Hag said, “The team is progressing, and we are winning trophies. Two trophies in two years is not bad. Three finals is not bad, but we have to keep going. I’m not satisfied with it.”
Despite dealing with an injury-ravaged squad, Ten Hag’s leadership helped United secure Europa League qualification with their victory over City at Wembley. The decision to retain him indicates a belief in his long-term vision and ability to further the team’s success.
