Toni Kroos Comments on Rudiger-Fullkrug Training Ground Incident
Toni Kroos humorously blamed Niclas Fullkrug for his training ground altercation with Antonio Rudiger, but believes the confrontation could positively impact the Euro 2024 hosts.
The Real Madrid defender was involved in a tense exchange during a public training session earlier this week. During a crossing drill, Rudiger clashed with Fullkrug, resulting in the Dortmund star falling to the ground. An angry Fullkrug confronted Rudiger, prompting coach Sandro Wagner to step in and separate them as they “almost came to blows.”
The situation quickly calmed down, and star midfielder Toni Kroos has since commented on the incident, expressing his support for such displays of passion, albeit with a touch of humor at Fullkrug’s expense.
Positive Impact on Team Dynamics
In an interview with ESPN, Toni Kroos remarked, “I see it as a good thing when situations like this occur. Although I had to take the wind out of the sails a little, it wasn’t meant to be taken too seriously. The only person Niclas was angry with was the referee. He knows that it’s his own fault if he gets into a duel with Toni.”
Despite the incident, Rudiger and Fullkrug, who are known to be close off the pitch, seem to have reconciled. Fullkrug posted a photo on Instagram of the pair with the caption “jumping into Euro week,” to which Rudiger responded with “Lüüüüückkkkkkkkeeeee” and a heart emoji. The duo was later seen embracing and smiling during Germany’s latest training session.
Preparations for Euro 2024
As Julian Nagelsmann’s squad finalizes preparations for their opening group game against Scotland, Kroos spoke about the significance of the upcoming tournament. “Basically, at every tournament on home soil [there is pressure]. It is even more special. You get feedback instantly, the positive and the negative. We have a big responsibility for the atmosphere in the country for the next few weeks. We know what this is about but it is also a great honour and joy to play this tournament.”
Following the Scotland match, Germany will face Hungary and Switzerland in their group games. Reflecting on their preparation, Fullkrug said, “We learnt some lessons from the Greece game which will be useful against Scotland. I’m interested to see how the coaches will prepare us for the game.”
