Wayne Rooney has named his top three for Euro 2024 and has concerns about England’s squad and experience going into the tournament.
Rooney told The Times: “For me, three teams stand above the rest at Euro 2024. France, Portugal… and England.”
With the tournament about to start, Rooney says Gareth is right when he says it’s all about winning now.
Wayne Rooney Worried About England’s Lack of Experience at Euro 2024
Despite having England in his top three, Rooney has concerns about the squad and the balance between old and new. “I worry about lack of experience,” he says.
“Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson aren’t in the squad and Harry Maguire is injured. That’s a big problem for Gareth.”
Wayne Rooney, who won 120 caps and scored 53 goals for England, says it’s not Gareth’s fault.
“Injuries and people losing form have taken out Harry Maguire, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford and Gareth has had to pick from what’s in front of him.”
While he agrees with Southgate’s decision to go with the talent available, Rooney says he would have had Henderson in the squad for his leadership and experience:
“Even if he wasn’t going to start games, I would have had him there for his personality and know-how, his ability to talk to the young lads and be that calming presence that some players need in a group sometimes.”
Wayne Rooney’s words on England at Euro 2024 are both hopeful and worried – the hype and the pressure.
