UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against Serbian FA following their 1-0 defeat to England according to report from Mirror Football.
The Three Lions secured victory on Sunday evening which was thanks to Jude Bellingham’s early header. However, UEFA’s actions were prompted by incidents off pitch.
A statement from the governing body on Monday read: “Disciplinary proceedings have been instigated in accordance with Article 55 of UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR) following UEFA European Championship group stage match between Serbia and England (0-1) played on 16 June 2024 in Gelsenkirchen Germany”.
“Charges against Football Association of Serbia (FSS) include: Throwing of objects Art. 16(2)(b) DR, Transmitting a provocative message unfit for sports event Art.”
“16(2)(e) DR. The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) will decide on matter in due course. Furthermore an UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector will conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding alleged discriminatory behaviour.”
This intervention follows violent clashes between Serbian and English fans in Germany. Bottles, chairs and tables were hurled into air by rival groups outside a bar in Gelsenkirchen.
A German police spokesman said: “There was confrontation between Serbian and English football fans in city of Gelsenkirchen. The two fan groups were separated and even people were taken into custody. There was also complaint of grievous bodily harm though background to this is still unclear.”
UEFA Disciplinary Actions and Upcoming Matches
Back on the football field Serbia began their Euros campaign with narrow defeat to Gareth Southgate’s England. Serbia’s next match is against Slovenia. They conclude their group stage against Denmark.
In a related disciplinary matter, UEFA announced that Scotland star Ryan Porteous has received a two-game ban for his red card offense The defender was sent off during Scotland’s opening Euro 2024 game against Germany.
Steve Clarke’s side were trailing 2-0 at the time of Porteous’ crunching challenge on Ilkay Gundogan. VAR awarded penalty that was converted by Kai Havertz. Porteous’ tournament might now be over should Scotland fail to advance from group stage.
A statement confirmed: “Suspend Scottish Football Association player Mr Ryan Porteous, for total of two (2) UEFA representative team competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible. For serious rough play.”
Additionally the body fined the Scottish Football Association €5,625 for throwing of objects during Friday’s 5-1 defeat to Germany. Scotland aims to secure their first victory of the tournament against Switzerland. Before facing Hungary.
