Kai Havertz made a surprising move across London last summer, swapping Chelsea for the Gunners in a £65m deal. Initially, there was scepticism about the switch, but Havertz defied critics by excelling under Mikel Arteta. Though signed as a midfielder, he became a crucial part of the attack, netting a personal best of 13 Premier League goals. His impressive form has seen him display his unique celebration frequently, with Germans hoping to see it at Euro 2024.
Kai Havertz Inspiration Behind the Celebration
After scoring, Havertz places his hands on either side of his head, palms open, and sticks his tongue out simultaneously. In an interview posted on Arsenal’s official YouTube channel in January, the attacker revealed his inspiration came from a Brazilian icon. “Neymar used to do it,” Kai Havertz said, as reported by the Mirror. “And recently I was in the national team, and one of the guys, Marvin Ducksch, who plays for Werder Bremen, told me to use his celebration if I scored. I did, and it just carried on.”
Neymar’s Influence
Neymar first showcased the celebration during Paris Saint-Germain’s pre-season tour of Japan. The now-Al-Hilal superstar used the gesture to hit back at media accusations of diving to win a penalty in PSG’s 6-2 win over Gamba Osaka. Havertz first emulated the celebration on Ducksch’s suggestion during Germany’s 3-2 defeat to Turkey in November. Ducksch explained, “We were sitting next to each other on the bus, and he promised he’d do my celebration if he scored. He kept his word, and it made me really happy!”
Kai Havertz opted for a different celebration after scoring in Germany’s opener against Scotland.
