Wales’ hopes for Euro 2024 were dashed as they failed to qualify for the tournament. In their recent friendlies, they managed a 0-0 draw with Gibraltar but suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Slovakia. Rob Page, who had previously led Wales to their first World Cup in 64 years, saw his team finish bottom of Group B in Qatar, drawing their opening game against the United States.
Rob Page Faces Criticism Due To Euro 2024 Failure
After the defeat to Slovakia, Page acknowledged the dissatisfaction of Wales fans: “They want me out. I completely understand. I’ve got to stay true to myself and focused on the job in hand. Everything else is out of my control. I clapped them with the players and when the players walked, I made a point of going over to the supporters and saying, ‘it’s on me’. I get the frustration. [I feel] low, disappointed, of course. I’m human at the end of the day and nobody wants to fail.”
FAW Thanks Rob Page for His Service
Despite the recent setbacks, Dave Adams, FAW Chief Football Officer, expressed gratitude for Page’s contributions: “I would like to thank Rob for his work with the Association over the last seven years, firstly as the U21s Head Coach and then onto the role of Cymru Head Coach.
Rob’s work has delivered success reaching the Round of 16 at EURO 2020 and qualification to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and during his period we also integrated 18 pathway players into the senior squad. As we move forward this experience will support our objective to consistently qualify our Men’s National Team to major tournaments.”
