Fans have stated that there is a more emotional explanation for Cristiano Ronaldo’s selfless assist to Bruno Fernandes in Portugal’s recent win against Turkey.
Portugal easily defeated Turkey 3-0 on Saturday to top Group F and earn a spot in the Euro 2024 knockout stage.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s selfless assist
A lot of spectators were taken aback when Ronaldo, declined to score his team’s third goal, choosing instead to set it up for former Manchester United teammate Fernandes.
After breaking through the Turkish defense, the two had just the goalkeeper to face when Ronaldo crossed the ball for Fernandes to score into an empty net.
However, there’s now a deeper sentimental explanation for Ronaldo’s decision to set up Fernandes.
Sharp-eyed supporters saw that Ronaldo’s pink footwear for the second half had the name Matilde, Fernandes’ daughter, inscribed on them.
Reddit users have alleged that Fernandes had borrowed Ronaldo his pair of boots (pink coloured) during the half-time break, as the 39-year-old attacker was seen putting on a different boot (green in colour) in the first half.
Afterwards, the two players combined to score Portugal’s third goal, as Cristiano Ronaldo set Fernandes up for a tap-in into an empty net despite being through on goal.
Fans react to Cristiano Ronaldo’s selfless assist
According to The Sun, fans have now attributed Ronaldo’s selfless act to the boot change in half-time.
One fan said,”Ah that’s why he assisted Bruno for the third goal instead of just scoring by himself.”
While another one wrote, “Top 10 wholesome moments.”
