England head coach Gareth Southgate has been advised on which player to drop in order to see Phil Foden thrive in attack for the Three Lions.
Foden, who had an incredible campaign with Manchester City last season, has failed to replicate the same performance for England in Euro 2024.
The 24-year-old midfielder who won the 2023/2024 Premier League Player of the Season award has been one of the most talked-about among the England stars, as many believe his abilities have not been optimized by Gareth Southgate.
Ashley Cole’s advise to Gareth Southgate
Former Arsenal star Ashely Cole believes Foden could get his spark back if he tried on the right wing instead of playing him as a left winger.
Cole is of the opinion that Arsenal star Bukayo Saka, who has England’s two games in the Euro 2024 as an attacker from the right flack, should be dropped for Foden to play from there.
“I would like to see Anthony Gordon play from the left, I would like to see Foden playing on the right because I feel he’s been unfairly dug out,” Cole Said, as per The Sun.
He continued, “You can still see it as a rest for Saka. I would like Foden to show the world how good he is because we know.
“I feel he’s been unfairly criticised playing out of position. People might go ‘Well he’s a world class player, he should be able to adapt’. Fair point, I understand that.
“But what I see of him playing for Man City I would like to see him play there [on the right].”
Gareth Southgate’s men will face Slovenia in their final group game, following a 1-0 win over Serbia and a 1-1 draw against Denmark in the first two games. With four points, the top of group A is heading into the encounter and will be looking to remain top at the end of the group stage.
