A horrific collision between Hungary striker Barnabás Varga and Scotland’s goalkeeper Angus Gunn left the final group game between the Tartan Army and the Magyars delayed for over 10 minutes.
Varga, a teammate of Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboslai, seemed to have taken an elbow to the face after colliding with Gunn during an attempt on a free kick.
The Hungary striker crashed to the ground and lay there motionless as the referee halted the game.
A number of players, including Szoboszlai, were spotted crying. The Hungary captain even dashed off the field to rush stretcher bearers as they walked to the scene, evidently in a state of concern for Varga.
Varga was ultimately brought off the field amid cheers from both sets of supporters following a ten-minute wait.
The game later commenced as Hungary grabbed a late winner courtesy of Kevin Csoboth to keep hopes of making it to the next round alive.
Hungary head coach gives update of situation
Varga will have surgery after sustaining a facial fracture, head coach Marco Rossi disclosed in his post-game interview.
“Barnabas Varga’s life is not in danger.
“He will undergo an operation after fracture in his face and he won’t be available for the rest of Euro 2024,” Rossi sad, as per The Sun.
The Ferencvaros striker will be unable to participate in the remainder of Euro 2024.
