Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou commended Cole Palmer’s attacking prowess after England’s goalless draw against Slovenia. Despite England’s disjointed performance they finished top of Group C. They will face either the Netherlands, Romania Slovakia, Ukraine or Belgium in their last-16 tie on Sunday.
Palmer’s Impact Against Slovenia
Palmer made his first tournament appearance replacing Bukayo Saka in the 71st minute. He quickly became England’s most likely player to break the deadlock. He played against Slovenia’s organized defense. Postecoglou commended Palmer’s performance, calling him a “rare” talent. Every time he’s got the ball he’s looking to eliminate opposition. “He will always find that gap he will always find those spaces” Postecoglou told ITV. His first thought is, ‘how can I eliminate one of the opposition or a line of the opposition.’
Ange Postecoglou Encouraging Southgate’s Faith
Postecoglou also encouraged Southgate to show similar faith in Kobbie Mainoo. He impressed against Slovenia. Adam Wharton Crystal Palace midfielder, has yet to appear at Euro 2024. Postecoglou addressed Southgate’s decision to replace Conor Gallagher with Mainoo at halftime.
“I don’t know if it’s swallowing your pride. Gareth said he felt it did sort of work in the function he wanted. He wanted a more aggressive press. It was logical to put Conor in there. But then he said he wanted more impetus with the ball. So then Kobbie becomes much more viable option.”
England’s last-16 match will take place in Gelsenkirchen. It is at 5pm on Sunday.
