Marcel Sabitzer has been praised as the standout performer of the tournament by Germany’s World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus. For Austria, Sabitzer has been very useful in ensuring they finish at the top of their Group, ahead of France and Netherlands.
Turkey will face Austria in the round of sixteen on Tuesday. Sabitzer was honored with the Player of the Match in the Austria-Netherlands match that ended 3-2.
Although his loan at United was successful the Premier League club failed to sign him permanently from Bayern Munich. Sabitzer then had a move to Borussia Dortmund, he netted four times in the Bundesliga and helped the club to the champions league final.
Matthaus Praises Sabitzer Euro 2024 Performances
European Championship winner with Germany in the year 1980, Lothar Matthaus has also expressed his fascination with Sabitzer when playing for the Euro 2024.
He took time and wrote in his Sport column that, “My Euro 2024 player of the tournament so far is Marcel Sabitzer, which I saw Austria beating the Dutch 3-2 in Berlin”. Matthaus further noted that he has only observed Sabitzer perform this well with Dortmund only rarely.
“Sabitzer shines in this outstanding team of Austrian players They topped a group that featured France and Netherlands and were not the weakest link in the team during the 1-0 loss to France.”
Matthaus Defends Havertz
He also took his defense for Kai Havertz’s position in the Germany’s team, he insisted Julian Nagelsmann to stay with the Arsenal forward in their lineup for the last 16 match against Denmark. “Havertz is also underestimated,” Matthaus wrote pointing to Havertz as a pivotal playmaker of the German team.
