The Euro 2024 round of sixteen clash between Germany and Denmark was temporarily halted as a result of lightning strike above the stadium in Borussia Dortmund.
Germany vs Denmark lightning: Players retreat to dressing room
The players from Denmark seemed eager for play to be stopped as the night sky became illuminated from lightning strikes.
Shortly after, referee Michael Oliver halted the game – with the players retreating to their dressing rooms before the game was resumed fifteen minutes later when the strikes had stopped.
The reason behind the Danish players’ reaction to the thunderstorm and their desire for play to end has been revealed by reporter Klaus Egeland, as he narrated an incident that occured in 2009.
Klaus explained on social media that many Danish players are aware of Jonathan Richter, the 2009 match victims struck by lightening.
He also mentioned that Richter had lost a portion of his leg while playing for FC Nordsjaelland and current Denmark national team boss Kasper Hjulmand, was his coach as at then.
Richter’s family acknowledged that he had the lower portion of his left leg amputated six weeks after being hit by lightning during a reserve match, as reported by the Guardian in 2009.
At age 24, Ritcher retired from football and the club retired his shirt.
He is currently 39 years old and is on the board of Danish football’s fourth-tier team, FC Graesrodderne.
