UEFA’s suspension rules drew the ire of Ian Wright after Spain edged past Germany 2-1 in the Euro 2024 semi-finals via penalties in extra time Sportsbuddy.ng reports.
However, there is bad news for Spain as Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand were shown their second yellow cards of the tournament meaning they will not be able to play in the semi-final.
Controversial Yellow Cards
Realizing that he was already banned from the next match, Carvajal deliberately committed a red card offense in the last few minutes to leave his team with only ten players.
The card given to Alvaro Morata for celebrating was meant for Fabian Ruiz. In case of the UEFA’s Article 54, the card accumulation gets rubbed out after the quarter final, however, a player who received two yellow cards before this stage cannot participate in the semis.
Ian Wright described this rule as ridiculous and said, “We’re five games in now so you can get booked in the first game and then the fourth game and miss the semi-final. It’s too much.
Reactions from Pundits
Roy Keane acknowledged the challenge but remained optimistic: “They probably won’t be too bothered in the dressing room,” said Keane,
“You’ve won the game, and you’ve got a squad of players, and you just have to get on with it, you could have missed a final. ”
The analyst also conceded that Spain was not only an aesthetically pleasing team to watch but also tough: “But I must admit they are not only a pretty team but a hard one to play in the next stage, Spain will play with France while the host country Germany is eliminated at the quarter final stage.
