Gareth Southgate has announced his resignation as England manager following Sunday’s devastating 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
Southgate had a contract that is meant to expire in December, but he has chosen to step down after almost eight years in the position.
The 53-year-old manager led the Three Lions through four major tournaments after being appointed manager of England permanently in November 2016.
Southgate also led his team to back-to-back European Championship final (2020 and 2024); however he lost both to Italy and Spain respectively.
Gareth Southgate announces resignation

”As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all, Southgate said, as he confirmed his resignation.
”But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager,” he added, as quoted by Daily Mail.
Meanwhile, Sports Buddy recently reported that England fans have identified the exact moment they believe Spain won the 2024 European championship. Southgate who was in charge of the team in the 2-1 loss to Spain in the final also shares same sentiment.
