Things have gotten messy in the Argentina Sports ministry as an highly-ranked official has been dismissed after involving Lionel Messi in the on-going racism scandal.
Argentina have announced that Julio Garro will no longer serve as the country’s undersecretary of sport after he called for Lionel Messi to issue an apology for the national team’s disparaging song against French players.
Sports Buddy recently reported that Chelsea and Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández, issued an apology earlier this week after sharing a video on social media after his team’s 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa América final on Sunday.
An official statement was also been by the French Football Federation (FFF) via President Philippe Diallo, who condemned the footage and vowed to file a complaint with FIFA.
Julio Garro calls for an apology from Lionel Messi
Garro, prior to his exit as the nations sports undersecretary, said on Argentinian radio Urbano Play, “I think the captain [Messi] of the national team and AFA [Argentina Football Association’s] president [Claudio Tapia] should come out and apologise for this case.
“It is fitting. It [controversy] leaves us in a bad light with so much glory.”
Garro’s dismissal
Following Garro’s statement, the office of Argentina’s president Javier Milei’s released a statement on X and wrote, “The President’s Office reports that no government can tell what to comment, what to think or what to do to the Argentina National Team, World Champion and Two-time American Champion, or to any other citizen. For this reason, Julio Garro ceases to be Undersecretary of Sports of the Nation.”
