Fans were left stunned after what appeared to be the ‘Worst VAR offside line in history’.
Even more questions were raised when it was revealed how the shocking incident occurred.
Football’s adoption of video assistant refereeing (VAR) has managed to stir up controversy nearly every week.
Controversies associated with the Video Assistant Referee system
As a matter of fact, it took lots of deliberations, which resulted into votes from all 20 clubs in the English Premier League, to prevent the VAR system from being scrapped from arguably the best league in the world, according to reports from Sports Buddy.
In addition to controversies associated with the system, just one month ago, UEFA fired the incompetent Argentine referee who disregarded both Scotland’s VAR and its penalty claim against Hungary during the 2024 World Cup.
There was also an incident back in May when a referee in Argentina disregarded VAR’s advice and declined to send players off when there was chaos on the field.
There appeared to be even more chaos when Puerto Cabello and Portuguese fought out a goalless stalemate in the league encounter in Venezuela, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
It appeared as though the deadlock had been broken in the 87th minute, when an attacker from the visiting team’s outstretched leg met a cross from the left.

The jubilations were however, cut-short as play was resumed.
Those viewing on FutVe League broadcast watched a replay with a line placed to represent the offside.
Fans react to the ‘Worst VAR offside line in history of football’
To their disbelief, the line was astonishingly DIAGONAL, and some supporters were left stunned by the “lack of professionalism” displayed by VAR as they watched.
“He was offside in the fourth dimension,” a fan joked, while another said, “That line went all the way to the 6th floor.”
Further clarifications from fans
However, as fans persisted in jumping on X to express their ire at the skewed line, others, meanwhile, surfaced to provide some clarification.
One person explained, “I think it is important to clarify that this was done by those in charge of the transmission and has nothing to do with the VAR.
“To the FutVe League broadcast directors, please don’t do it again. They display the product very badly.”
And another revealed, “Important information: There is currently no VAR in the Venezuelan league.”
While a third said “This was done by the broadcaster, no var was in the game.”
