Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala has attributed the two consecutive losses of the team at the on-going Olympic Games in France to poor conversion of chances.
Against world champions Spain on Sunday, Waldrum’s team kept a very rigid defensive structure but was breached in the last few minutes by a deadly free-kick.
Barcelona’s two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas sealed the victory for her side with the 85th minute free-kick cross-shot goal.
Comparative Defensive Records
Of the twelve competing countries in the 2024 Olympic Games, only Spain and the United States are better placed defensively than the Nigerian team that has conceded two goals in two games.
On the other hand, Nigeria recorded the worst attack in the tournament with no goals scored.
While Rasheedat Ajibade has stood out due to her creativity and adaptability, Atlético de Madrid’s forward kept missing multiple easy opportunities.
Asisat Oshoala’s Debut and Team Performance
Oshoala started her Olympics campaign against Spain, and although she played the entire ninety minutes, she was too shy to shine as Waldrum opted for a cautious approach against superior opponents.
The former Barcelona striker who gave her support to Spain during the just concluded EURO 2024 as reported by Sportsbuddy will be disappointed by the Super Falcons showing so far at the Olympics.
“All I can say is that I am proud of the team performance, I think we played good We played against the world champions and we had our chances, we had opportunities to score against Spain.” Oshoala said Speaking to Totori News in the mixed zone.
“The same thing happened to us in the first game We were not clinical and we just need to be clinical upfront, and if we start scoring goals we can compete with any team in the world ”
The Super Falcons’ next match is against Japan on Wednesday at Stade de la Beaujoire – Louis Fonteneau in Nantes will be a very important match for both teams.
