Team Nigeria’s Olympic outing has been marred by disappointing performances, with the latest setback coming in boxing events.
Aruna Quadri and Olajide Omotayo’s early exit from the men’s table tennis competition was followed by a double blow in boxing.
This was followed by Olaitan Olatoye’s elimination from the heavyweight category after losing 5-0 to Kazakhstan’s Oralbay Aibek.
Additionally, the country’s only representative in football events, the Super Falcons, have lost their opening two games, putting them at risk of an early exit from the tournament.
D’Tigress offer some hope
Amid the poor showings from ”Team Nigeria,” D’ Tigress has become the beacon of hope for the nation, defeating Australia 75-62 in their opening game of the female basket ball event.
The game, which could be considered the biggest basketball upset so far in the Olympics, according to to FIBA, saw Nigeria record their first victory at the games since Sydney 2000.

A bounce-back performance in the second quarter, following a slow start, was the turning point of the game for Nigeria, proving sufficient to defeat World No. 3.
