Arsenal have completed the signing of Italian defender Ricardo Calafiori from Bologna, after over a month of negotiations, according to recent reports from Sports Buddy.
Despite alleged interests from other high-profile suitors like Chelsea, Juventus, and Real Madrid, the 22-year-old center-back chose the Gunners, signing a five-year deal which would keep him at the Emirates till 2029.
Following his impressive season with Bologna, coupled with a stand-out Euro 2024 performance for Italy, the towering defender caught the eye of Arsenal.
Transfer delay amid interests from other clubs
The Gunners immediately initiated negotiations with in order to acquire the him; however, complications in the letter of his Bologna contract caused delay.
Upon acquiring Calafiori from Basel, the Italian club consented to give the Swiss club 50% of his sell-on price. This resulted in issues with the transaction and a later postponement.
Despite the player having already agreed personal terms with Arsenal, there was was still a chance for other clubs to hijack the deal, with reports claiming Real Madrid among a few other clubs, showing interest in the versatile defender during this period.

However, after protracted talks, the Gunners finally announced the signing of the talented defender.
Calafiori, during his unveiling, revealed why he chose Mikel Arteta’s side over other prominent suitors.
“It’s just the best project for myself for the next years,” Calafiori explained.
“I spoke a lot with the coach, with Edu… they convinced me, but I was already convinced by myself! Premier League was my dream since I was 12! I can’t wait.”
In addition, Calafiori’s decision-making was also influenced by Arsenal’s defensive midfielder Jorginho. The former Basel defender revealed that his compatriot played a part in his move to the Emirates, sounding him a convincing sales pitch.
