Granit Xhaka risks the wrath of Arsenal fans with his recent comment, which appears to be a dig at his former team.
Despite a recent resurgence under Mikel Arteta, the North London club have failed to win major trophies, with their last Premier League title coming 20 years ago.
It’s a stark contrast to the success enjoyed by some former Arsenal players, like Robin van Persie, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Olivier Giroud, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who have either won the Champions League or league titles since leaving the Emirates.
Granit Xhaka, who spent seven years at Arsenal, is another name on that list.
The Swiss midfielder moved to German side Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2023 and has since become a key figure in the team, and one of the top 10 best midfielders in the world for 2024, helping Xavi Alonso’s side win the domestic double in grand style.
While he won four titles with the Gunners, his recent comments hint at a belief that his current club might be on a higher pedestal.
What Granit Xhaka said
Granit Xhaka with the Bundesliga trophy.
“The move from Arsenal to Bayer Leverkusen was not a step back, but rather two steps forward.
“We have to do better than last season now,” Xhaka told @BILD_Bayer04.
Granit Xhaka has confidently asserted that his move from Arsenal to Bayer Leverkusen was a significant career upgrade rather than a step backwards, implying that the Gunners do not measure up to the standards of the Bundesliga champions.
