Chelsea midfielder John Obi-Mikel has rubbished media claims that he belittled Luka Modric before the UEFA Champions league final match against Borussia Dortmund last season.
It has been claimed that the 37-year-old was supporting Karim Adeyemi’s team during the match that took place at Wembley Stadium.
Some reports emerged reporting that the ex-Super Eagles captain accused Madrid players of not deserving to be champions of UCL despite having a good team.
After receiving significant criticism on social media, the 2016 Olympic Games bronze medalist stated that he never said such things.
John Obi-Mikel Sets the Record Straight
“That’s nonsense. It’s unimaginative to say that Luka Modric, Carvajal, Kroos, Nacho are not good enough to play for Madrid anymore.”
“These are world-class players and I have never said such a thing, nor will I. Anyone who does is clearly out of their mind. That was fake news,” Mikel said in the Obi One Podcast.
He also lauded UEFA Champions League final goalscorer and Euro 2024 winner Dani Carvajal, indicating he could be a Ballon d’Or candidate.
“Carvajal is a Ballon d’Or nominee so i would never say such things because I understand and played the game.”
In a previous report from Sportsbuddy, Mikel has frowned at some players who deny their African root and prefer playing for non-African nations.
“I met Luka and he couldn’t believe I’d say such things. I have a lot of respect for these players; they are legends and icons of Real Madrid; winning the UEFA Champions League six times is not a small achievement. ”
As at now, Real Madrid is in the United States for their pre-season tour. Currently, Nigeria’s Samuel Chukwueze scored the only goal in the recent match between AC Milan and Los Blancos.
