Ex-Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi has sparked controversy by calling Real Madrid the greatest club in the world, despite his close ties with the Blues.
During his trip to Spain with his podcast team, the legendary Nigerian shared his opinions about Real Madrid’s esteemed standing.
With an amazing record, Chelsea are one of the most successful clubs in England. Not only are they the only London club to have won both the Champions League and the Club World Cup, they are also the only club to have won all three of the major European competitions twice.
Chelsea has won six league crowns, eight FA Cups, five League Cups, and two FIFA Club World Cups. The London-based team has also twice won the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
Despite boasting of this array of accolades, Mikel Obi picked 15-time UCL champion Real Madrid as the biggest club in the world over his former club.
What Mikel Obi said
“We are in Madrid, Spain, the home of Real Madrid, the biggest club in the world. I think so,” Mikel said.
When co-host Chris McHardy asked him to draw comparisons with Chelsea, Mikel argued, “Tell me who else is the biggest? They’ve won way more than Chelsea.”
Mikel spent more than ten years at Chelsea and was a member of their 2012 Champions League-winning team.
