Jose Mourinho has decided to change his ‘Special One’ nickname, which he has been identified as for over 20 years, as he coins a new one following his recent struggles with the team.
How Jose Mourinho’s ‘Special One’ nickname came about
The self-acclaimed ‘Special One’ nickname came into existence following his appointment at Stamford Bridge in 2004, after a successful time with Porto, where he won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa Cup, two League titles and the Taca de Portugal.
“I have to say this.
“We have top players, and I’m sorry I’m a bit arrogant, we have a top manager,” Mourinho said in his inaugural press conference in Chelsea, as quoted by BBC.
“Please don’t call me arrogant, because what I say is true. I am a European champion, so I’m not one of the bottle.
“I think I’m a special one,” he added.
Jose Mourinho would then go on to solidify his claims by wining the Premier League and the League Cup in his first season with the Blues, followed by an FA Cup and another League Cup the next season.
Mourinho, left the Blues in 2007, for Inter Milan, were he won the Treble, including a UCL title- the second in his managerial career- before moving to Real Madrid, were he also broke records winning titles.
Since then, Mourinho has moved back to Chelsea, coached Manchester United, Tottenham, and Roma, with barely a season going by without the Portuguese manager winning a trophy at least.
Jose Mourinho was appointed Fernabache manager in June. Since his appointment, the club has had a mixed results, including getting eliminated in the UCL qualifying rounds.
Jose Mourinho changes name
Following a recent 2-2 draw with Göztepe S.K. in the league, a chaotic game that saw Fenerbahçe’s president attacked by opposition fans, Jose Mourinho announced that he would be changing his name.
“It looks like it’s for me to adapt [to Turkish football], and not vice versa,” Mourinho said.
“I am the one that arrived, I am the Foreign One. I am not going to change the state of things, so I need to adapt.
“It’s not Turkish football that has to adapt to me. It’s me that has to adapt to Turkish football.
“My players, they have to do what other teams do to us. They need to take time, they need to go on the floor. They need to stop the game, they need to simulate injuries – they need to do what every team does,” he added.
