Bayern Munich sporting director has condemned Chelsea’s recent transfer activities.
Max Eberl has commented on the current transfer activity, describing it as unsustainable.
Before Bayern’s encounter with Wolfsburg, Eberl justified why the club had to let go of Matthijs de Ligt to Manchester United.
Prioritising Squad Balance
Eberl was keen to add that Bayern’s transfer policy is not influenced by supporters’ choice but by its long-term vision.
Max Eberl on selling de Ligt: “I understand that there are fan favourites, but we don’t make decisions based on fan favourites. We spoke to Vincent and made decisions regarding the squad.”
“Of course we know how Matthijs performed, and we wouldn’t talk bad about him. But we made decisions regarding the defence; we wanted a left-footed defender; that’s why we signed Hiroki.”
“We spent money on Olise, Palhinha, and Hiroki. So as a club, you have to generate money. You can’t do like Chelsea and go into the season with 45 players. We spoke clearly to the player and made the decision, and that’s how it was.”
Financial Prudence vs. Reckless Spending
Eberl compared the position of Bayern with Chelsea recently, which spent a lot of money under Todd Boehly.
Despite big moves in big players, the Blues have not enjoyed as much success on the pitch as one expects. Their poor show was evidenced by the 2-0 loss to Manchester City as the two teams started the new Premier League season.
This has made many fans and pundits wary of Chelsea’s spending habits as they have gone on a rampage in the transfer market, with Joao Felix as the latest addition to the club, as reported by Sportsbuddy.
This perception has forced influential personalities to call on the club to make more strategic decisions in their bid to get the best returns on their investments.
Chelsea face Wolves this weekend, and Chelsea will surely want to get a much-needed win.
