Nigerian football club Heartland FC are mourning the passing of their coach, Christian Obi, after the team bus got involved in a ghastly road accident in Okigwe en route to Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, according to
Sports Radio Brila FM on X.
The incident occurred on Friday while the team made the trip to participate in the Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/SELECT preseason tournament.
According to reports, the vehicle, in its attempt to dodge an oncoming vehicle, collided with another carelessly parked vehicle from another accident.
Some players and other officials who sustained injuries have been taken to the hospital for treatment, while Coach Obi has been confirmed dead.
Heartland mourns passing of coach
Heartland have announced the passing of their gaffer in a statement that read,
“With sadness in our heart and total submission to the will of God, Heartland FC announce the death of Christian Power Obi, who died on Friday 23rd August, 2024, from a road accident enroute Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, to participate in the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Pre-season Tournament.”
Obi, 57, was at the helm of the team last season, before the appointment of Emmanuel Amunike.
Christian Obi was a Nigerian youth international goalkeeper who competed in the men’s football tournament of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
