Enzo Maresca’s latest comment on the club’s ambition might not sit well with Chelsea fans.
Chelsea put up an impressive performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, defeating Gary O’Neil’s side 6-2 following a disappointing 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the opening league game last weekend.

Despite this resurgence, the Chelsea boss seems to be hedging his bet, as he recently revealed that his ambition is not to compete for a top-four spot.
What Enzo Maresca said

Maresca, in a recent interview, claimed the club only asked him to improve players and not necessarily vie for a Champions League spot.
‘‘No one from the club asked me to compete for a Champions League spot, they just asked me to improve players and the team,” the Italian manager said, as quoted by Sky Sports.
Maresca’s comments may not be well-received by Chelsea fans, especially given the club’s recent absence from the Champions League.
Chelsea have suffered a below-par return in the last two seasons, having finished in twelfth and sixth place in 2022-2023 and 2024-2024, respectively.
The Blues, however, found themselves competing in the Europa Conference League playoff, despite finishing in a Europa League spot. They were relegated to the third-tier European competition following Manchester United’s 2-1 victory in the FA Cup final.
Now under a new manager, with just two games into the new season, Chelsea fans are eager to see their team compete in the UCL once again. However, Maresca’s comment has raised concerns among supporters.
Meanwhile, the manager has been quite vocal since joining the Blues this summer.
Maresca recently called out winger Mykhailo Mudryk following a disappointing display against Wolves on Sunday, while also praising Noni Madueke for an impressive performance in the same game.
