The football world has suffered a huge loss as former England boss Sven-Göran Eriksson has been announced dead at the age of 76 after battling pancreatic cancer.
“Sven-Goran Eriksson has passed away,” a family member wrote in a statement, as quoted by Sky Sports. “After a long illness, SGE died during the morning at home surrounded by family”
Eriksson announced that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year.
Following his cancer diagnosis, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by leading Liverpool Legends in a charity match against Ajax at Anfield in March.
Sven-Goran Ericsson as England manager
Before Gareth Southgate, who recently resigned as head coach of the Three Lions, there was Sven-Goran Ericsson.
Ericsson made history in 2001 when he became the first foreign coach of the England men’s football team.
He led the so-called “golden generation” of players like David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, and Frank Lampard.
Throughout his illustrious career, Eriksson managed a number of high-profile European clubs, including Benfica, Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria, and Lazio.
He stepped down as England manager after the 2006 World Cup and subsequently managed Mexico, the Ivory Coast, Manchester City, and Leicester City.
