Former boss Glenn Hoddle believes the Blues cannot get carried away just two games into the season, despite trumping Wolverhampton Wanderer on Sunday to claim their first win under Enzo Maresca.
Chelsea smashed the Midlands side at Molineux on Sunday to bag their first league win under Maresca following last weekend’s league opening defeat against defending champions Manchester City.
The visitors dominated the second half, scoring four goals in a row. Joao Felix, Cole Palmer, and Nicolas Jackson each contributed a goal, while Noni Madueke netted a hat-trick.
While Maresca’s team may have been boosted by their comfortable win, Hoddle has given them a harsh reality check. The former England manager thinks Chelsea’s victory was too easy and that they’ll face tougher challenges later in the season.
Hoddle on Chelsea’s performance
“It was basketball, there was no defending you could pull it to bits defensively for 90 minutes. But it made for a fantastic game. But with Chelsea if you give good players time and space on the ball they will hurt you.
“If you closed down you’re under pressure, whether you’re a striker, midfielder or defender and life becomes different then. But Chelsea were given so much space,” he added.
Chelsea will play Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge following the second leg of their Europa Conference League qualifier against Servette and draw inspiration from Sunday’s victory as they go in search of their first home league win next weekend.
